Special mention to our longtime tour partner Precita Eyes Muralists, temporarily closed due to SIP, and slated to reopen in June. Might I suggest a stroll through the neighborhood to enjoy the murals on Balmy Alley? Then circle back to the Precita Eyes website to learn more about the mural artists and to support their street art via donations here.

This week in pandemic picks: Spread the word about Six Feet of Separation, the free youth newspaper from Bernal Heights and beyond, edited by SF scribe and homeschooling parent Chris Colin (who co-authored the This is Camino cookbook, if you need a food link). Its editorial policy: Yes! For and by the younger set. Devour Everything is Out of Control, the memoir by Berkeley author, chef, and homeschooling parent Phyllis Grant, of the Dash and Bella blog. This is an adult read. With recipes! A prose poem, pretty in pink packaging. Sign up to attend (online & in your kitchen) The Great Big Jewish Food Festival (May 19-28) featuring Ruth Reichl, Adeena Sussman (live, in her kitchen, in Tel Aviv), and Michael Twitty.

Partner recipes to add to your repertoire: Speaking of cookbooks and Jewish food: Signal boost to the recently-released Eat Something Cookbook from Wise Sons’ Evan Bloom and local food writer Rachel Levin. Try your hand at the Wise Sons recipes for chocolate babka or brisket. Or how about the challah grilled cheese with pastrami jam? You’re welcome.

Sign up for our COVID-19 Quarantine Cocktail Classes, in partnership with top mixologist Dolly Valdez Bautista of Hawker Fare in San Francisco. This week: Special guest appearance by Francisca’s Manny Torres Gimenez who will demo how to make arepas. Cheers!
